I'm a salesman. I used to be a fat salesman, but now I'm a slim salesman. I wasn't happy being fat, but I had a busy lifestyle and I ate between calls, between meetings and especially at home. I tried several diets but nothing worked because I was lacking in willpower.
Last year, one of my colleagues loaned me a copy of Influence – a book by Robert Cialdini. Robert Cialdini is an academic – a psychologist – who has studied how we can influence other people and how others influence us.
Cialdini's book is excellent for anyone interested in sales and marketing. It also became my secret weapon in my hitherto losing battle to lose weight.
One of the weapons of influence Cialdini describes is Commitment / Consistency. What this boils down to is that, if I tell someone I'm going to take a certain action, I'm much more likely to take action than if I don't tell anyone that I'm going to take a certain action. I'm even more likely to take action if I sign a document saying I'm going to take action. Having publicly committed to anything, people like to be consistent.
Cialdini describes how a woman who wanted to lose weight had her commitment to lose weight printed on a card. She then gave the card to members of her family and to people she most respected. As a result of making such a public declaration, the woman was successful in her efforts to lose weight.
So that's what I did. I got a card printed. On the day of printing, I weighed in at 231 lb. (105 kg). I had that weight printed on the card. I also had my vow printed, on my honor, that within 12 months, I would reach a weight of 180 lb. (82 kg).
On each printed card, I signed my name personally. Then I gave a card to everyone I knew, promising to drop my weight from 231 lb. to 180 lb. within 12 months.
It worked – simple as that. I couldn't bear to let myself down and I found the willpower not to eat in situations when, before, I would have given in. I carried a picture in my head of all my family and friends and colleagues looking at me in disappointment at the end of a year if I failed.
If you are struggling to lose weight, this is an excellent way to do it. |
