What's wrong with a good old fashioned diet to lose weight?
Apparently nothing, but that doesn't explain the new trend of patients opting for surgery over a little hunger in order to shed their unwanted pounds.
Surprisingly, the trend seems to be most pronounced in Europe, with the number of overweight patients seeking gastric by-pass surgery increasing by 60 percent just last year. Janet Edmond of the British Obesity Surgery Patients' Association commented on the situation, "There has been a huge increase in surgery," continuing, "We expect it to double next year as well."
Perhaps this drastic increase in weight loss surgery can be attributed to a variety of factors. First off, it should be noted that the obesity rate of the British population has quadrupled in the past 25 years. In fact, 75 percent of the population is now considered overweight and 20 percent is considered obese.
Also, many experts agree that gastric bypass surgery is now considered safe enough to be a cosmetic surgery. A new alternative to having your stomach permanently altered can be found with a gastric balloon. Many patients are opting for this temporary procedure in which a balloon is inserted into an individual's stomach to decrease the overall volume of their stomach, leading to a smaller appetite.
Regardless of whether the procedure is considered safer or not, the real issue is the rate at which obesity is spreading and the health risks that coincide with it. Time will tell whether these weight loss procedures prove to be effective.
